Tech Tip: Span sets are generally too thick for a traditional style carabiner to hold without weakening the carabiner. Professional riggers don’t use carabiners with Span Set or GAC Flex. Instead, we use steel shackles and secure the screw pin with a zip tie to ensure it cannot loosen under vibration.

Fun Fact: Nylon, among the common “life safety” materials, is the most frequently used. Its cost-effectiveness, combined with its strength and durability, makes it the perfect material for designing life safety gear. Nylon molecules possess a unique type of “memory” that allows them to realign after being exposed to heat. Heat is generated every time force is applied to the sling. When a shock load causes a nylon sling to break, the broken end fibers may be melted and can even bond to themselves again once cooled. If a sling is loaded close to its breaking strength without actually breaking, the material will sustain damage. However, nylon remains damaged for the shortest period due to its remarkable molecular memory. Other high-strength fibers do not have the same memory as nylon and will suffer “permanent” damage once loaded near their breaking point. Technora is one of the highest strength materials used for life safety gear due to its exceptional heat resistance. When a Technora product is shock-loaded, it experiences less damage from the heat generated, which leads to a shorter recovery time at the molecular level due to the reduced thermal damage. We use nylon slings and Technora ropes for all our rigging needs.
